As a PROJECT MANAGER overseeing training software for the US military, I’ve found the best path to improving any project is to find where it is failing its audience, then to remake it without that failure. So to that end, I prefer adapting AGILE methodologies to core teams within a project, and to try multiple solutions to a single problem rather than sinking time into unnecessary meetings that can impede velocity.

AGILE and SCRUM methodologies are good at scale, but can be cumbersome when applied to smaller teams rigidly. My approach is a modular adaptation of AGILE, one that: prioritizes velocity over rigid meetings, promotes accomplishing tasks through team based “show and tell” sessions, and demands the adaptation of all design documents into an interactive digital bible that can be continually added to, monitored, and broken into actionable tasks as development progresses.

For complex projects, teams might end up with different schedules, but each is optimized to preserve their velocity between tasks. This approach allows all teams to move as fast as possible between their iteration cycles, allowing leads to see where any faults are immediately.
